Friday Focus: Power of culture, different perspectives

    November 15, 2024

With temperatures finally dipping below zero, it is time to say welcome to winter here at America's farthest north land grant university. The moonlight is sparkling on the hoarfrost; the nights are getting colder, darker, and longer. Yet, last Saturday evening, the Troth Yeddha' campus lit up the night with lights, vibrant colors, and a joyful warmth. It may be cold, but last weekend America's Arctic University was awash with laughter and music in celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. As I was reminded, Diwali is a time to gather with loved ones, share in traditions, and honor the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. This year's celebration at °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ· beautifully embodied these themes, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and members of the wider Fairbanks community.

  • This subsection of a page is from a class project created by Shayla Sackinger. There are two images showing a cross section of a human wrist with tendons, bones, and nerve fibers. Part of the text reads: certain movements of the wrist increase pressure in the carpal tunnel and, if done repetitively, will compress the carpal tunnel and pinch against the median nerve and flexor tendons. This is what causes the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. One of the cross section images is labeled with text: The transverse carpal ligament compresses the median nerve.

Friday Focus: Celebrating small successes to combat stress

    November 08, 2024

This week (Nov. 4-8) is International Stress Awareness Week. As I reflected on the semester so far, messages about stress awareness popped up on my news feed and I paused to think about how stress impacts our lives. Over the past few weeks, I noticed an uptick in the number of students and colleagues talking about how they felt stressed, or burned out, or simply that their energy level was low. Submitting assignments, grading papers, meeting proposal deadlines, attending to student needs, keeping the campus safe, mentoring students, balancing professional and personal needs, the pressure of a never-ending to-do list, and the feeling of insufficient progress were just a few of the reasons I heard. The lengthening darkness of Interior Alaska, this particular phase of the academic cycle, and for some, the approaching festive season likely brought on or heightened this stress-induced fatigue. However, it is an unavoidable fact that we will all experience stress to different degrees, at different times, and with different frequencies throughout our lives.
