Fall classes are completed, grades are submitted, earth system researchers and grad students have returned from AGU, staff are finalizing year-end projects, and campus is feeling a lot like the holidays. In this period of transition before the end of the year, I am reflecting on everything that has happened at °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ· in the past 12 months. It's been a busy year! Thank you to everyone who spent another year dedicated to °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ·'s mission. It takes a million little things to go right every day to keep °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ· running, and it takes all of you to keep it running well. Thank you.

TYPFAs will support a limited number of prospective Ph.D. students for fall 2025 and spring 2026. Awards can include coverage of tuition, fees, research assistantships and health insurance.

Workshop: Civility in the workplace

The prevalence and costs of incivility are on the rise in organizations. When employees are exposed to incivility in the workplace, they experience diminished self-control, which creates increased incivility toward co-workers. A session on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, from 11 a.m. to noon will help you understand why we act less civil today and give some suggestions for making sure you don’t exhibit behaviors that are uncivil.

For many of the business-suit types in Washington, D.C., jeans, t-shirts, and backpacks camouflage science rockstars as they scurried between sessions at the American Geophysical Union meeting this week. Every year over 25,000 geoscientists assemble to discuss their results, discover new collaborators, and learn what is happening at the cutting edge of their field. And hopefully, due to the hard work of the °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ· Research AGU booth committee and many others, more are enticed to join us here, in Fairbanks, as new faculty or new students. °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ· was well represented with more than 170 faculty, students, and staff participating in AGU24 giving roughly 180 presentations during the week. While old hat for many faculty, presenting at AGU is a rite of passage for students as they advance to their degrees.

Martinson to retire after 34 years at °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ·

A retirement celebration for Tracey Martinson will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 18 from 3-5 p.m. in the lobby of the Margaret Murie building. Martinson has worked at °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ· in various capacities for 34 years, most recently as director of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Risk Management.

Ph.D. visit nomination form available

Faculty members can now nominate their top candidates for °ÄÃŲʿª½±½á¹û¼Ç¼ÀúÊ·'s campus visit for prospective Ph.D. students. The visit is scheduled for Feb. 27 - March 2, 2025 and will be fully funded, including airfare, activities, meals and lodging for those selected.
